A good story. What I liked was the weaving of past and present, the sense of place-kind of a mysterious Africa, and the character Mbuna. It was good how both lead and supporting characters had goals. What I had some difficulty with was the ending. I did not feel aense of danger going into the sword fight and it was over before any could develop. It also struck as odd that he would attack when he acknowledges earlier in the story that he shouldn't until his strength has returned.

Glad you liked it, and thanks very much for posting your impressions. The sense of place was one of the things that drew me in as well, perhaps for me because it wasn't just a physical place but also Mbuna felt like part of the "place."

I enjoyed this story very much. I found the descriptions almost lulling, with wonderful word painting. The setting, as has been mentioned, was strong and satisfying. I also liked the sense of pacing within the writer's sentences as well; the story felt unhurried, much like I'd imagine that lion padding through the grassy plains...
