Marie Brennan, whose story "Driftwood (http://www.beneath-ceaseless-skies.com/story.php?s=29)" appeared in BCS #14 (http://beneath-ceaseless-skies.com/toc.php?s=14) and was Audio Fiction Podcast (http://beneath-ceaseless-skies.com/audio.php) 013, has posted on her website a free novella set in the world of her recent Onyx Court fantasy novels (http://www.swantower.com/marie/novels/onyx/index.html).
"Deeds of Men (http://www.swantower.com/marie/stories/onyx/dom.html)" takes place between Midnight Never Come (http://www.swantower.com/marie/novels/onyx/mnc/index.html) (2008) and In Ashes Lie (http://www.swantower.com/marie/novels/onyx/fire/index.html) (forthcoming in June). It's a murder mystery set at the end of James I's reign and the beginning of Charles I's -- 1621-1625. Ms. Brennan says "You don't need to have read either novel for this story, but be warned that it does (unavoidably) contain some spoilers for Midnight Never Come (http://www.swantower.com/marie/novels/onyx/mnc/index.html)."
