Excellent world-building and smooth style. Thank you for avoiding the “idiot plot.” I used to love fantasy fiction but got turned off by stale ideas and tired tropes, but I didn’t realize new writers were turning those tropes around and breathing new life into them. Here’s the old born-to-be-something-great trope upended. It never did make much sense to me, but in this story it’s not so much about a senseless prophecy or meaningless accident of birth, but it’s about the individual and that person’s decisions — how refreshing! Perhaps I gave up on the genre too soon.

Hmmm, I wonder what other treasures I might find in this journal …
